fringes

Moses is commanded to instruct the Israelites to make fringes (NRSV; ‘tassels’ REB, NJB, Num. 15:37) on the corners of garments, as a reminder of the Ten Commandments. Jesus is said to have criticized Pharisees for making their fringes over-conspicuous (Matt. 23:5), but he himself certainly wore them (Matt. 9:20; 14:36).
